Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR / ˈ s aɪ d ər, ˈ s ɪ-/) is a method for allocating IP addresses for IP routing. The Internet Engineering Task Force introduced CIDR in 1993 to replace the previous classful network addressing architecture on the Internet. Its goal was to slow the growth of routing tables on routers across the Internet, and to help slow the rapid exhaustion of IPv4 addresses.. CIDR is a system for allocating IP addresses and managing IP routing. It stands as a departure from the traditional classful IP addressing system, which divided the IP address space into fixed blocks based on classes (A, B, and C). CIDR introduces a more flexible and efficient approach, using variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) to allocate IP.

Classless InterDomain Routing Information
The solution to this problem is classless interdomain routing, in other words we stop working with the classful networks and start working with classless networks. Classless networks means we don't use the class A,B or C networks anymore but are free to use any subnet mask we like. Also instead of writing down the subnet mask like 255.255.255.. CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) is a network concept designed to oversee the allocation of IP addresses. Introduced in 1993, CIDR replaces the previous outdated classful network addressing system. Generally, classful addressing involves three classes: class A, class B, and class C. With CIDR, there's no wasted IP addresses.
